1970's Retrofit

One of our favorite geothermal projects was retrofitting a 1970’s built home with geothermal heating and cooling. The owner’s goal was to reduce their carbon footprint and increase their year-round comfort.

The Basics of Geothermal Heating and Cooling

Start with House Plans
Every geothermal design starts with house plans, and heating load calculations. The building materials and R-values are input into a design software which will provide the heating loads in BTU/hr.

Common Horizontal Ground Loop
This is a common horizontal ground loop. Each trench contains 1200 linear feet of piping. The trenches are dug with an excavator and measure 300’ long x 6’ wide x 6-8’ deep.

Net Zero Ground Source Heat Pump system
Another Net Zero unit. This system replaces natural gas boilers and comes with a COP of 4.9 (Over 500% more efficient than natural gas!) This project located within Rocky View County near Calgary.

What is Geothermal Heating and Cooling?

Vertical ground loop header trench located in Strathcona County. Primarily, vertical ground loops are used for geothermal wells on small plots of land.

Pit Ground Loop
Pit ground loop located near Barrhead, Alberta. These customers dreamed of having a swimming hole off their back deck, and heating their house with geothermal. What a dream property!

Pond Loop
Pond loop install near Slave Lake, Alberta. As water is a great conductor, if you’re planning to have a dugout that’s at least 12’ deep, a pond loop might be right for you. This ground loop was fused on the ground and dragged to it’s resting place by an excavator. Notice the rebar to help the ground loop sink to the bottom of the pond.

Drilling Mud and Vacuums
Managing drilling mud is critical on urban projects as we don’t want the drilling mud to run down the streets and sidewalks. As a result, mud tanks and vacuum trucks are utilized to dispose of the mud. This project is located near Edmonton’s South Gate Shopping Mall.
Backfill and Leveling Yard
Customers always ask what their yard will look like post installation. Well, here it is! As you can see, we backfill the trenches and level your yard, the only thing left for you to do is plant grass seed, sod, or landscape. This home built in the 1940’s is located in Belgravia within Edmonton.

Half the Yard gets Excavated
This is an example of a project completed in 2023 which shows the excavated space in the front yard. Moral is, we drill wherever your utilities are not present. Most ground loops can fit one half of the yard, leaving the other half available for soil stockpiling. This project is located in North Edmonton

What are Geothermal Heat Pumps and Geothermal Pipe?

GeoSmart NetZero Heat Pump
Considered the “Cadillac” of heat pumps, this Geosmart Net Zero system is capable of both Hydronic and Forced air heating AND cooling. It also efficiently generates domestic hot water while the unit is operating. As this is a variable speed, it runs for most of the day as it’s more efficient than starting and stopping multiple times. As a result, ample HOT WATER!

This Premium Q retrofit replaced a forced air furnace and boiler. You also get cooling with geothermal so essentially, this is 3 pieces of equipment in 1.

Air source hybrid domestic hot water tanks are commonly used in our retrofit installations. These tanks allow for the domestic hot water to be indirectly heated using the geothermal heat from inside your home. These tanks are extremely efficient and are approved for us with government grants. No natural gas connection required!

We get asked all the time, how large is the heat pump? Our reply – It will fit inside a closet mechanical room. This 3-ton heat pump heats and cools a 950 sq ft residence just a couple of blocks from Whyte Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.

Geothermal heating is silent and always available. Geothermal is also used to cool your home and not another unit taking up space in your yard and home.

Geothermal energy systems have fewer environmental impacts than fossil fuels. Geothermal heating and cooling is an efficient way to heat and cool homes and businesses that are too far from propane and natural gas lines.

A disadvantage is the high initial cost for individual households. The need for drilling and installing a specific system are additional costs. Your electric usage will increase with geothermal heating and cooling, but that additional cost won’t be divided equally throughout the year. Your electric bill will likely be lower in the summer than you paid previously. You’ll be spending less money overall than when heating with oil or propane.
